Pokrovsk. As the increasingly brutal battle for the city known as the “Gateway to Donetsk” or “Krasnoarmeysk(Red Army Town)” by the Russians has dragged on for the better part of two years, the 7th Rapid Response Corps of the Air Assault Forces of Ukraine commanded by the recently promoted Brigadier General Yevhen Lasiychuk(already the owner of the much coveted Hero of Ukraine award), has become the main fighting formation in the Pokrovsk area, with the able assistance and support of units detached from other corps. But nominally the 7th Rapid Response Corps of the Air Assault Forces, is responsible for the defense of the Pokrovsk-Myrnohrad area in Donetsk Oblast.
As the above caption map shows, the Russians are pressing hard and much of the area of Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad has become a giant gray zone with no clear demarcation of front lines or force locations. That makes for a very dangerous terrain to fight in … for both sides. So given Ukraine’s perennial shortage of personnel vis a vis Russia’s seemingly endless pool of mobiki, why does Ukraine insist on holding on to Pokrovsk-Myrnohrad? The reason may be more than tactical. Denying Putin and Krasnov a propaganda victory is a big part of it. And Pokrovsk has bought Ukraine much needed precious time to amp up their rear defensive lines(seen later in the video).
But as they say, a picture(video?) is worth more than a thousand words. The video linked below is a bit longish. Nevertheless it provides some key insights … delivered by the chief spox for the 7th Rapid Response Corps of the Air Assault, Col. Volodymyr Polevyi. Please kindly watch the whole video:
