In a brief, unsigned Supreme Court order released on Wednesday, California will be allowed to use its new congressional map for this year's midterm election, after the state's voters approved the redistricting plan last year as a Democratic counter response to a new GOP-friendly map in Texas.

The US Supreme Court has allowed California to use a new voting map that favours Democrats, paving the way for the party to gain up to five congressional seats this year.

The unsigned order from the court did not give a reason for the decision.
