The vile, putrid, purile, filthy, disgusting AI-generated ‘video’ of the Obamas that Trump posted late last night — that the White House deleted this morning only after even Republicans said they couldn’t stomach it — is getting the story it deserves from the New York Times. Yes, that New York Times.
Trump Deletes Racist Video of Obamas After Outcry
As the photo above shows, the story is above the fold on the front page, and minces no words whatever. The opening paragraph is even blunter:
President Trump posted a blatantly racist video clip portraying former President Barack Obama and the former first lady Michelle Obama as apes, then deleted it after an unusually strong and public outcry from members of his own party. [emphasis added]
No pussyfooting. No equivocation. No suggestion that the Times accepts the lame claim that “some staffer did it.” No softening language, no hint that perhaps it was just a joke.
It was the latest in a pattern by Mr. Trump of promoting offensive imagery and slurs about Black Americans and others.
The decision to delete the link from his Truth Social account was an unusual retreat by Mr. Trump, whose own press secretary just hours earlier had brushed off criticism of the video and made no attempt to distance the president from it.
But further down, it gets even more interesting:
The clip was in line with Mr. Trump’s history of making degrading remarks about people of color, women and immigrants, and he has for years taken aim at the Obamas in particular.
It then goes on to report some of that history. And to dismiss the White House’s lame attempts to excuse or deny Trump’s open racism.
The New York Times is woke! Or, well, it woke up (which is the point of the whole “woke” meme).
(CNN has a similar story at the top of its webiste — Trump shares racist video depicting Obamas as apes on Truth Social, then removes it amid bipartisan outrage — and that story too minces no words, though it doesn’t dig up as much of Trump’s history of racist remarks to the extent that the NYT does. CNN also gives some credibility to the ludicrous “a staffer did it” excuse.)
We have spent a lot of energy on this blog over the past years blasting the Times for “sanewashing” Trump, for excusing Trump, for “bothsiding” Trump, for reaching for euphemisms instead of telling it like it is — all in the service of selling more papers regardless of the harm it did the country. And they deserve every bit of that criticism. But by the same token, when they release a story which doesn’t do any of that, but instead cuts to the chase from the start and calls out Trump for what he is, in plain language — “President Trump posted a blatantly racist video clip” — and not for the first time, in all fairness we have to applaud them for it and encourage do it all the time.
It’s especially important now that Trump, through Bezos, has reduced the Washington Post to his lapdog, and is attacking any and all other media that even looks like it is thinking of telling the world the truth about Trump. Writing and posting this story took some courage; they should know that we commend them for it.
