Recently, a Republican from the Great State of New Mexico called into C-SPAN in order to apologize for having voted for the felon — 3 times!
Here’s the clip and the transcription:

Three-time Trump voter: I'm looking at this awful picture of the Obamas. What an embarrassment to our country. He is not worthy of the presidency. He takes bribes blatantly, and now he's being a racist blatantly. He's pathetic as a president, and I want to apologize for supporting this rotten man.

Here’s my best version of the transcript:
Caller: I’m a registered Republican. My dad was the president of the American Pipe-liners association, so I came by it rather naturally. Voted for the president, supported him, but I really want to apologize. I mean, I’m looking at this awful picture of the Obamas. What an embarrassment to our country. All this man does is tell lies. He is not worthy of the presidency. He takes bribes blatantly, and now he's being a racist blatantly.
They were supposed to deport the dangerous criminals. They were not supposed to go after small children, storm schools, bring terror, you know, upon the little kids, and the women and children. Not just the immigrants in the school, all the children are scared.
This is not a decent man. This is not (and honest man?). He openly takes bribes. He's pathetic as a president, and I just want to apologize to everyone in the country for supporting this rotten, rotten man.
Moderator: Did you vote for him in all three elections?
Caller: I did. I was sucked into the stupidity of creating jobs. And --- and there are no more jobs in New Mexico. Some things are worse than they were before. You cannot find a primary care physician. Our governor* just passed some laws to try to help. If you are young physician, we want you in New Mexico.
Note the NM governor is Michelle Lujan Grisham, a Democrat. Good luck in the red states!
Yeah, I know many will roll their eyes and say too little, too late. That he should be doing something more than just apologizing.
But this isn’t the only case. In fact, it’s happening enough that SNL parodied it last week (clip below).
Also, I would argue that by calling into CSPAN and apologizing, he has done at least one thing to make amends.
What is also interesting are the things that bug this caller:
- The racism (some of us want to go really? as that seems to have been the point of all the felon and his minions, but it’s good that it bugs this guy)
- The lies (I’ve seen this from other apologetic Rs, and yes, I know we have all known this for a while — better late than never, I guess)
- Taking bribes. As this caller mentions this more than once, this seems to be a point that matters to Rs. In other words, this is a really good pressure point, and the more obvious we make it, the better.
- Not deporting criminals but going after schoolchildren. Yes, I know, the family separation policy combined with putting children in cages in the felon’s previous term should have made it clear that kids would not be safe, but obviously this guy was slow to connect the dots.
Studying these points and messaging on them may be the best way to reach these people who are considering leaving the felon.
I know people like this have a lot to do to earn redemption. That there’s something wrong with them.
But maybe, if they are trying to leave the cult, we shouldn’t kick them on their way out? We will win many more elections with them on our side!
Here’s the promised SNL skit:
