I’ll try to post another 20 or editorial cartoons either as manual updates (just above the diary poll) or in the comments section. I’ll post the additional cartoons over the next 1 ½ hours while I grab a very late dinner! :)
Thanks for supporting this diary series.
Does Anyone Ever Resign from Political Office in This Country?
New York Magazine: “The House Oversight Committee’s scheduled closed-door deposition of convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell went as expected Monday, with the onetime British socialite refusing to answer any questions related to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein and their alleged crimes.”
“But Maxwell’s legal team signaled that she was open to sharing everything she knows about the situation… if President Donald Trump offers her a federal commutation or pardon.”
“Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick is facing bipartisan calls to resign after he appeared in a recent batch of files linked to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein,” Politico reports.
A prominent member of the country's aristocracy has been thoroughly discredited, stripped of all official duties, and reduced to a commoner without any privileges or benefits that would normally accrue to someone in their position. An ambassador to a major capital city has been recalled, removed from office from the upper legislative chamber, and is being investigated for potentially forwarding state secrets to Jeffrey Epstein. Above all, there is a real possibility that the leader of the ruling party may well have to resign his office for neglecting to thoroughly investigate the aforementioned ambassador before appointing him to that sought-after position.
If you thought the Epstein Scandal would have forced any perpetrators to pay a severe political price in America, you would be wrong. The above is taking place in the United Kingdom, not in this country. When things go politically awry in a parliamentary system, often there are calls for accountability. Ministers, who are also members of parliament, resign, and sometimes, prime ministers have to follow suit. A no-confidence vote in parliament can ensure that result and lead to new elections. Out with the old, in with the new. As it should be. Decency and shame seem to still matter in British politics.
In the American system of government, four-year presidential terms make it virtually impossible to remove Presidents, even when their behavior warrants it. Impeaching the leader might be possible in the US House of Representatives, but conviction and removal remain a dream unless there is a super-majority in the US Senate. It is the price we pay for so-called political “stability.”
If I were a prominent American in high finance, high tech, academia, the world of law, an elected government official, a professional sports owner, a philanthropist, or a billionaire celebrity whose name was mentioned in one way or form in the Epstein Files, I would be embarrassed, shaking in my boots, and fear that the rule of law would compel me to defend my erratic, and in many cases, criminal behavior. As bad as some of the disclosures have been, most people believe that we haven’t even seen the worst of it, as three million additional Epstein Files exist, but have not been released. The US Department of Justice has no plans to do so, either.
Should the Democratic Party regain control of the US House of Representatives — and possibly, the US Senate — in November 2026, I hope the first order of business would be to investigate these crimes, prosecute this so-called “Epstein Class,” seek justice for innocent victims, and restore trust in government. It is time to cleanse this filth and hold guilty members of the country’s corrupt and decadent elite accountable and be forced to pay for their crimes.
We should demand nothing less from the leaders of the Democratic Party. We’d be happy to look forward once they have dealt with the sordid past.
