No, Not The Onion. Wikipedia: 2026 Strait of Hormuz crisis. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) issued warnings prohibiting vessel passage through the strait, leading to an effective halt in shipping traffic, and huge spikes in oil and natural gas prices worldwide. Gasoline is up about 40¢/gal in the US.
The warnings and subsequent attacks on vessels caused a sharp decline in maritime transit, with tanker traffic dropping first by approximately 70% and over 150 ships anchoring outside the strait to avoid risks,[2][3] and soon traffic went to about zero. This disruption affected about 20% of the world's daily oil supply and significant volumes of liquefied natural gas (LNG), prompting major shipping firms to suspend operations in the area.[4][5] Oil and gas prices surged, with Brent crude rising up to US$92 per barrel at its peak, amid fears of prolonged supply shortages that could push prices toward $100 per barrel.[3][6][7]
Of course, the US is also putting itself under sanctions as oil spikes above $100/bbl within the first week of this insane and stupid war.
The Good News
Without a terminally stupid war on, this could have been our top story.
Or this. Yes, we are at Peak Carbon, and past Peak Carbon per Capita, but we have to get below Net Zero for warming to slow down.
Solar PV has seen the same learning curve as semiconductors generally, where your smartphone today is much more powerful than the original Cray 1 supercomputer, at 1/10,000th of the cost.
x
Solar PV: $76.67/watt in 1977. Under $0.30 today. A 99.6% decline.
The forecasters keep underestimating it. Every year the actual cost beats the previous year's projection. Manufacturing learning curve, not policy.

As I pointed out before, China is expanding solar power quickly, as explained in this article: Why China Built 162 Square Miles of Solar Panels on the World’s Highest Plateau by Keith Bradsher from October 2025 from the (failing) New York Times.
China pushed more than one million people out of their homes in west-central China a quarter-century ago and flooded a vast area for the reservoir of the Three Gorges Dam. This year, China has been installing enough solar panels every three weeks to match the power generation capacity of that dam.
Come on, U.S. Try to keep up.
