Amidst reports of chaos in the White house, Trump called up Masoud Barzani and Bafel Talabani, two prominent Kurdish leaders of Iraq. Reports say that US and Israel overestimated the number of Kurds who might take up arms against Iran.
Kurds have historically been allies of the US and Israel. They have been partners in aid and intelligence, and more recently, in direct military confrontation against the ISIS. However, in the last year, both Israel and US severely mistreated and betrayed the Syrian Kurds. Israel treated them no better than tools to destabilize Syria. And US sidelined them to curry favor with Turkey, leading to them getting trapped between an increasingly aggressive Turkey and Syrian forces. Despite their best efforts, Kurds got spread too thin, resulting in thousands of ISIS prisoners breaking free. This is likely to become a long term threat to everyone now.
While the details of Trump's conversation with Kurdish leaders isn't known, it is unreasonable to expect that his use-and-throw approach has gone unnoticed by them. Kurds largely occupy north western Iran, along with large presence in neighboring Iraq, Syria and Turkey.
