Today was a far busier day at Casa Brillig than we expected. Mr. Brillig is eyeball deep in his job search and a couple of promising things happened today that rearranged our schedules. Our youngest, a sophomore in college near New York City, is staying there this week for Spring Break and asked if we would be able “to maybe come down for dinner one night”. We will NEVER turn that request down, so today included a grocery trip to get what I needed to make his favorite food to bring with us. And then there was the laundry basket full of socks and underwear needing folding.
Oh, and nobody knows what time it is because yesterday was #$%^ing Spring Ahead Day.
This is my way of saying that it wasn’t until after dinner I remembered I helm Top Comments tonight!!! So let’s talk about what’s on many of our minds…
Gas prices. Ever since last Tuesday I’ve been tracking the price at the Costco where I fill my tank almost every time when I’m not traveling. It’s really easy to do because I can look on the app for the price without having to actually drive there. In addition, I keep a log of every fill up so can check back quite a ways to see what that same gallon of gas cost over time.
Let’s set the stage: my last fill up of 2025 was on December 29th, and it was $2.50 ($2.499, but I’ll be rounding up in every case because that $0.009 is annoying)
Until last week I only have records for when I actually purchased gas. Let’s see what they say for 2026:
Jan 9th: $2.44
Jan 22: $2.42
Feb 10: $2.60
Feb 22: Still $2.60
The United States and Israel began their air assault on Iran on February 28th
Tuesday March 3rd: $2.64 ← This is the last time I filled my tank
Wednesday 4th: $2.75 Wow. Up $0.11 in 24 hours
Thursday 5th: $2.80. Welp, add another nickel overnight
Saturday 7th: $2.90 I forgot to check on Friday, but another dime in 48 hours
Sunday 8th: $2.96. Oh look, another price increase
Which brings us to today, Monday 9th: $3.06. When I first checked at 11am it was still $2.96, but sometime in the next four hours it rose by ten cents.
We’re up $0.43 in six days. I fully expect it to rise again tomorrow, and the day after. The drive we’ll take on Thursday to visit our son will be about 370 miles round trip, or about 13 gallons of gas.
President Donald Trump has dismissed the higher cost, telling ABC News Chief White House Correspondent Mary Bruce it's "a little glitch."
"I think it's fine. It's a little glitch. We had to take this detour..."
A little glitch. Rising prices, thousands of dead Iranians, at least seven to date American military casualties, and it’s a little glitch.
What are you seeing at your local gas stations? Come help us keep track in the comments! After tonight’s Tops, of course!

My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. I knew that AI-created music was an issue, but this comment by learn in today's APR by Greg Dworkin was rather shocking.
TOP MOJO
Top Mojo for yesterday (Sunday), March 9th 2026, first comments and tip jars excluded. Thank you mik for the mojo magic! For those of you interested in How Top Mojo Works, please see his diary on FAQing Top Mojo.
Before you go… many years ago I got to know musician Brad Delp not in his Boston persona, but as lead singer of the Boston-area Beatles cover band Beatlejuice. The music was very dear to him, and when I hear the Beatles, I always think of him. He left this world on March 9, 2007, and so please enjoy a bit of him singing how I remember him best. It really was more than a feeling.
Long, beautiful video here, but this one below is special to me because I saw him at that venue many times, and it’s where we gathered the night after he died, instead of the show they were supposed to do.
