Fear. Be afraid, be very afraid!

The current US administration uses fear/terror against it's own people constantly and it is sickening to me. Why do we need to be afraid? Even when we were in the Cold War and had 20,000 Ruskie nukes pointed at us we weren't told to be afraid - we were told to duck under the desk and cover your head and everything would be fine. We need to be dilgent and aware, not scared shitless into handing over precious civil liberties that our country fought wars over.

Here's a great quote from a political blog I read:

I suspect that the lessons about to be relearned are those from fascist Italy and Germany. Bush's ever expanding power grab from Congress needs to be checked before we slide down that slope. I am currently reading Conservatives Without Conscience by John Dean a "Goldwater Conservative" and former White House counsel for Nixon. He was writing this book with Senator Goldwater who's death put the project on hold for a number of years until the current Adminstration came to power and he felt compelled to finish the book. He explains that the current adminstration is anything but "Conservative" but rather "Authoritarian" pushing the country towards fascism. When the Vice President suggests that voting for a democrat is a vote for al Qaeda, it shows their total contempt for the very democracy they try to inspire in Iraq.

I think we should get out of Iraq. It is a completely failed policy. We should redeploy troops to the Kurdish north of Iraq, bring some home and move a significant portion back into Afganistan to finish the job we aborted there. I am not for "cutting and running" and it's ludicris to think that the Democrat party is even suggesting that we give up on the Global War on Terror but that's the spin put out by the GOP. They are not concerned about protecting America, they are concerned about holding on to power at any cost but it is slipping away each day. They get excited over terrorist plots because they wrongly believe that they will scare Americans into voting Republican once again this year - notice how the terror alert hasn't been raised since before the '04 elections? and now that the GOP is looking like it will go down in flames this November we see a Red alert for the first time?

So yes, be afraid, be very afraid. We have spent 300 Billion on Iraq but can't find the money to secure our Sea Ports, Air Ports, or Borders? Here's a great idea - let's cut taxes more!! We can't let the GWOT go unfought, but we can't "stay the course" either. It's time for a change - boot the incumbents! Clark-Feingold '08
