I remember as a child being so fond of the story of Pinocchio, and carry the moral in my mind as an adult today. I recount the most memorable lines from the story,"How do you know I am lying?" "Lies, my boy, are known in a moment. There are two kinds of lies, lies with short legs and lies with long noses. Yours, just now, happen to have long noses."
The story about the two kinds of lies struck me, as I listened to Senator Clinton yesterday try to compare her exaggerated Bosnia story to prior statements of Senator Obama. Did she think we have forgotten the story of Pinocchio? Some lies are those that have short legs. The statement may not be true, but no one seems to notice nor care. However, Senator Clinton's exaggeration was absolutely one with a long nose. Senator Clinton had several opportunities to not embellish her foreign policy experience before the Bosnia video was aired. She was confronted by several reporters asking her to comment on Sinbad's recollection of the events, to which she then replied "He is a Comedian" and went on to tell her hyped up story.
What we also know about Pinnochio is that he lied more than one time.
In 2002 in a Senate Floor speech to give authorization to President Bush to go to war, Senator Clinton said:
"Even though the resolution before the Senate is not as strong as I would like in requiring the diplomatic route first and placing highest priority on a simple, clear requirement for unlimited inspections, I will take the President at his word that he will try hard to pass a UN resolution and will seek to avoid war, if at all possible... This is a very difficult vote. This is probably the hardest decision I have ever had to make -- any vote that may lead to war should be hard -- but I cast it with conviction."
At the time of casting her vote she acknowledged that the resolution lacked a diplomatic approach. She states that the resolution did not make weapon inspections the highest priority. But, despite these pertinent facts, she willingly cast her vote, and took the President at his word. But, in an interview on Meet the Press, Senator Clinton changed her story by saying that she thought "it [her vote] was a vote to put inspectors back in" Meet the Press January 13, 2008
Even as late as 2006,Senator Clinton stated that she believed committing to a date to withdrawal troops was irresponsible:
"I understand that because certainly the feelings about Iraq are very raw and deep. And I share them. But I don't think that's responsible. And I've taken a lot of heat from my friends who have said, 'Please just, you know, throw in the towel and say let's get out by a date certain.' I don't think that's responsible, either. And it may be frustrating for some, but I don't think complicated situations in life or, frankly, in foreign policy and military affairs often lend themselves to answers that can be put into a sound bite." September 2006 ABC interview with Cynthia McFadden. But, she says now on the campaign trail that she will draw up the plans necessary to begin withdrawing our troops within 60 days. Clinton Speech January 4, 2008.
So, if some how Senator Clinton is able to obtain the nomination, and perhaps even the Presidency will Iraq be another time in which Senator Clinton has a visible long nose?
