The Senate Judiciary Committee voted along party lines to endorse Dawn Johnsen, Barack Obama’s nominee for Justice Department legal counsel, after a heated debate Thursday over Johnsen’s past statements about abortion and George W. Bush’s national security policies.

As the meeting came to a close, Leahy made a plea to the Republicans in the room to allow for an up-or-down vote on the Senate floor for Johnsen's confirmation. While confirming he would vote "yes," Leahy emphasized that everyone from either party should get the opportunity to cast a vote. But 60 votes are needed to cut off a likely Republican filibuster of Johnsen’s nomination, and it’s not clear if any Republicans will cross over yet.

U.S. Rep. Nathan Deal will delay his resignation from Congress by three weeks, citing intense pressure from House Republican leaders to remain and vote against President Barack Obama’s plan to overhaul the nation’s health care system.

Isn't he facing some ethics contracting thingy?

One additional side effect for Deal: By resigning from Congress, the Republican candidate for governor ended an ethics inquiry into whether Deal misused his office in an attempt to protect his private business in north Georgia.

Whether the inquiry could be revived and a report issued over the next three weeks is a question worth asking.

And that is about allthey got.

Democratic leaders are still predicting victory in the House. Rep. Joe Crowley of New York, head of the New Democrat Coalition, emerged from a White House meeting with the president, and declared, "when all is said and done, we will have the votes to pass health care reform."

Since the GOP wants to be so helfpul and all.

Key Homeland Security posts go unfilled

The Obama administration, more than a year after taking power, and Congress have not filled some key positions in the Department of Homeland Security -- notably the top jobs at the Transportation Security Administration and Customs and Border Protection.

Together, the two posts manage about half of all DHS employees. But for differing reasons, the posts are unfilled or occupied by placeholders.

In the case of the TSA, Erroll Southers -- whom President Obama nominated in September -- withdrew from consideration in January after a contentious confirmation battle with Senate Republicans. The White House has yet to name a new nominee, all but ensuring the post won't be on board for months.

In the case of Customs and Border Protection, Obama nominated insider Alan Bersin in September. But the Senate Finance Committee -- neck-deep in health care legislation -- has yet to schedule a confirmation hearing, again ensuring that a new boss won't be seated and up to speed until at least midsummer, critics said.

Once again Max proves he is not a closer.

To repeat: This is all predicated on the idea that Senate Democrats want to challenge delaying tactics and possess the backbone to see a confrontation through. The point is that they have the tools at their disposal right now. Anyone who talks about additional reforms as a solution is just blowing smoke.

I know it may be off to think that someone who wants to prune back executive power would worry about Senate power, but I guess we all believe that it there is some floor level below which we should not sink.

A relative is delaying with Don't Tred On Me folks on a local trash recycling issue. Yes, those partying folks in the yellow tee shirts are against anything government.

Those against government seem to do their best to make sure it does not work to prove their point.
