Just returned from meeting Kathie Glass, Libertarian candidate for Texas Guvner. I really liked her and her stump speech, but since I'd looked at her website beforehand, I already knew what I wanted to ask her. More after the fold.
Just returned from meeting Kathie Glass, Libertarian candidate for Texas Guvner. I really liked her and her stump speech, but since I'd looked at her website beforehand, I already knew what I wanted to ask her. More after the fold.
I liked her, but I didn't like her overall response to my questions. I asked her if she thought racism was a factor in the anti-immigrant mood in the country, and if property owners on the border should have the right to resist government intrusions on their property rights-- fences, electronic surveillance, troops-- the sort of thing we saw under Bush and Chertof.
She completely ignored the first question, which was a great opportunity, I thought, for her to talk about Texas' proud multi-cultural heritage and how this isn't about making people feel unwelcome, this is about fair and equal treatment under the law. But nothing.
And to the second question, she made two points and a bizarre threat. She said there weren't that many property owners who would feel that way in the first place. I suspect she'd be surprised if she actually went down there. Then she answered the question: yes, property owners have an absolute right to prevent government intrusions on their property. That made me happy. Next came the threat: but if you're letting people use your land as a crossing, you'd better watch out... be careful.
Yikes. The Libertarians have definitely been drinking the Kook-Aid.
