Unemployment continues to worsen. In Job Growth Falters Badly, Clouding Hope for Recovery we learn that the unemployment rate is now 9,2% slightly higher than last month. The number of jobs created is not even close to keeping up with the growth of the work force.
About all democrats can say is "but for the stimulus the economy would be much worse." Republicans are saying the fault lies with government spending. The debt ceiling clock continues to tick and no one knows what will happen when it chimes.
I have been writing in many diaries that The economy is going to get ya, if you don't watch out. I have also written many diaries about the disastrous impact that austerity will have as in The Abyss - or the Black Hole.
Worse we have known for a long time what the short term, moderate term and long term solutions are. The short term solution is simple, increase spending on infrastructure, education, inexpensive "green" energy, birth management, research and development among other things. By increase, I mean to two trillion dollars a year over a 4 to 7 year period, less than half of what was spent during WW II.
Over the moderate term we must tax the rich, perhaps even amending the constitution for a wealth tax, and reduce defense spending. Also over the moderate term trade agreements must be renegotiated to that trade is fair, including insisting on our trading partners allowing labor unions and caring for their citizens. Over the long term we must raise of standard of living for all of the world by increasing productivity and education of all the world's people.
So what is the problem? The problem is one of ignorance by most people. People are ignorant about economics and what we as people are capable of. Other than attempting to educate I know of no solution. Unfortunately conditions for Americans are going to get worse. How much worse, only time will tell.
