Things have been extremely slow at work these days as we sit around waiting for the news of the impending layoff - waiting to see if we will get a severance package, what kind of notice we'll get, and what the details of the golden parachutes for the execs will be.
Thus I've had more time than usual lately to peruse Eschaton, Talking Points Memo, This Modern World, and of course the forums on Daily Kos.
And with the desks of my coworkers close enough to overhear any loud whispers, they can't ignore my daily imprecations when I learn of yet another instance of the utter failure of the current hooligans that stole our White House from us, that have hijacked US foreign policy, that have destroyed our environment beyond recovery, and that have lined their (and their cronies) pockets so incessantly and hypocritically since day one of their reign.
And so I have to just mutter things aloud.
And then I get an earful. Every time. And it makes me sick and it isolates me and it descends into the blackness of hell. Having facts, or a cogent argument, or evidence on one's side has nothing to do with being RIGHT when your up against the irrationality and hypocrisy of fundamentalists and dittoheads. I can make arguments till I'm blue in the face that get me nothing but derision.
I work in San Diego - the land where Bob Dornan is considered a moderate, where doing our civic duty means to raise protest whenever that socialist CNN is mentioned, and where Rush's talking point of the day becomes the droning thud that we work, eat and sleep by.
Forget about Bush's lies - Clinton's lies were worse, and besides, he was EVIL. Forget about Weapons of Mass Destruction, the Iraq war was justified because Saddam was EVIL. The right way to rid the world of terrorism is to wage war against their leaders, I am told, and theier follwers, like sheep, will just meekly bow down to the Standard White Jesus on the Cross of Corporatism. The sickos in Fallujah? EVIL and we should NUKE them. How would you react to a foreign occupation, to the assassination of your governmental, religious and civic leaders? Well, of course I would disembowel the invaders but in my case it's JUSTIFIED because they are EVIL and we are RIGHT.
So fine, it's great to pat ourselves in the back whenever we catch the assholes in a lie. But from where I sit here, it means so little to the Republican core because truth doesn't enter into it - just Good vs. Evil and they know damn well where Bush stands - why he even mentions God every chance he gets. Like the bumpersticker says, "The Bible Says It And That Settles It!" - don't try to confuse me with Facts as they are the tools of Satan.
Oy, can there really be any hope? We need to celebrate small victories I suppose but it is so hard to truly see any progress in a country that is so overriden with the Borg of the Right.
