The following quote is taken from Myrrander's diary titled "I Never Thought I Did, But I Guess I Hate America
":
"I'm pro-choice. Even for partial birth abortions. Without parental notifications."
Let me begin by saying this is my first diary, and that I don't plan on doing this too often anyway. I am not some fundie troll sent to perturb the peace of liberal blogdom, and that I ask these questions as a Canadian-raised, dyed-in-the-wool, red-blooded socialist, and an atheist to boot. Here I was, thoroughly enjoying Myrrander's diary, when I came across the preceeding line, and it got me to thinking hard about the accepted liberal dogma on abortion.
More on the flip side...
Let me throw two questions out:
- Can anyone finally explain to me what is the medical necessity of nearly fully delivering in breech position a viable foetus only to remove its brain through a vacuum hose before the head leaves the birth canal?
- Can anyone tell me to my face that hearing years later that your daughter had had an abortion without your knowledge while she was still a child wouldn't crush you as a parent?
I fully believe that, up to the point of foetal viability, a woman has every right to decide on what happenes to her body. Before viability, a foetus is but a tumour that cannot exist outside its host and so can be cut out at will. Past the point of viability, however, which modern medicine has brought down to 24 weeks, abortion is murder, the same as captial punishment.
As for the parental notification rule, no minor has the right to make decisions about their health. Your daughter cannot even get a tattoo without parental consent, but she has the right to have an abortion a semester, huh? Am I the only person who sees the disconnect here?
To tell you the truth, I don't have any answers. This is one of most inflammatory issues of the past two generations, an issue that still shapes our lives, yet it's a taboo subject in most circles. I put this out to all Kossacks to invite discussion on an issue which I have seen little mention of in the year I've been reading this site.
