My personal story, if I were to tell it here, reveals that I left the US and headed north to Canada where my wife is from. Immigration was relatively easy - my wife sponsored me, and now I am a citizen of both countries.
For those who don't have either a sponsor or a job lined up to help them get status in Canada, they can claim refugee status. That is what Jeremy Hinzman of the 82nd airborne has done.

interview with Nga Nguyen, Jeremy Hinzman's wife. She portrays their family life since they crossed the border. Of their case with Canadian immigration authorities, she states:
Well, we were going to lay low and do this quietly. But our lawyer told us that it would be good to make a public statement. And I see his point -- it is a good thing. It's taking a stand. It shows there are people willing to take this measure and say, "This war is wrong."
