Just when George Allen looked set for an unchallenged 2006 reelection bid in the runup to his 2008 presidential effort, we may just get a
credible challenger after all -- James Webb, a former Secretary of the Navy in the
Reagan Administration.
Are you interested in running for political office?
I have been talking to people about running for the Senate next year against George Allen, as a Democrat from Virginia. I have a very good life. I'm not sure that I'm going to do that or not but I have been talking to people. Thinking about it.
Plenty there for litmus test Dems not to like about Webb, he would definitely bring up the party's right flank (though he is a critic of the Iraq War). And I'm not going to waste much time speculating about what may be a throwaway comment at the end of a newspaper Q&A. But he's definitely the kind of guy that could play well in places outside Northern Virginia.
It would be brilliant for him to challenge Allen.
