Tomorrow morning, I'm leaving Austin with a truck and Uhaul full of my daughter's household goods. She and her boyfriend are moving to Salem, where he's enrolled in law school. She'll be looking for some kind of non-profit or activist job, such as she's done in Houston.
They're young and excited; I'm old and a little sad to have her moving so far away, and a little envious, frankly, of their big adventure.
But you know what? The kids are all right, and they're really looking forward to living in a more liberal community than Houston. More and a chance to get involved on the flip:
None of us knows anyone in Salem. It would be super cool to have a name or phone number or two of congenial and lefty folks there before we arrive - probably on Tuesday sometime. We'd be grateful for an intro to the city, info on where the neat stuff is, how things work there, etc.
My email address is on my profile.
If any kossack wants to help unload, we'd be thrilled. (Nothing heavier than a sofa). I will happily pay someone for a few hours help if you could use it.
I apologize for using a diary for such a personal appeal; but this has become my community for certain kinds of things. This feels to me like one of those.
If feelings run strongly against it, I will delete.
