A very conservative co-worker jusked asked me an excellent question: What does Howard Dean think is good about America?
This guy is a vet and an NRA member and unhappy with Bush. I don't think he'll ever vote for Dean, but he is willing to talk honestly about politics. He said many politicians he's spoken with are taken aback by the question because they are in politics to fix the problems.
I was a good Deaniac and responded quickly with democracy and opportunity and freedom. After a few moments I said, based on Dr. Dean's biography, that the physical beauty of the US is proabably high on the list. But honestly, I had to think about this question because for the campaign primarily focuses on making things better. In general I wish it had been easier to answer this question quickly and confidently.
So, I understand that this is not a life or death matter and is often answered with political baby food like "this is a strong nation" or "our country is good." But it occured to me that this is a very positive note the Dems (Go Dean) could hit on if done in an authentic manner, especially since we spend so much time challenging our governement and bemoaning the state of our union.
I phrased the heading in a challenging manner because I think we should be ready to hit this question out of the park. What do you all love about America? What do you think your candidates could say to this question?
What I wanna know is what's good about America.
