ok, we all have seen recent diaries where major poll organizations have refused to ask the question, "do you think george w. bush should be impeached." (dkos search is down right now, else i would link you to bob fertik's attempt to get gallup to pony up [pun intended] and, i believe it was armando's correspondence with zogby.)
and the pollsters given reason? "it's not in the public domain right now." "nobody's talking about it." "we only poll about current topics."
how convenient, as the church lady would say. of course it's not in the public domain right now, because the corporate media (zogby and gallup included) have done everything possible to silence the growing dissatisfaction the american public has with the dry drunk in chief.
as the organizer of two successful yearly "he's not my president day" demostrations at the veterans' administration in west los angeles, i think it's up to us. and how can we do it? well, like my sex life, we have to do it from the bottom up. i'll explain (but not the joke) after the jump:
my idea is to create a regular, ongoing grass roots demonstration calling for the impeachment of a
wol. if we, thru the internets, can organize a monthly, recurring demonstration in major and minor cities across the country, all calling for impeachment, then it will eventually seep into the "public domain."
i suggest the first saturday of every month. gather everyone you know who wants impeachment in your city, and organize a protest/demonstration, go to a well-trafficked area, hold up signs that say "impeach bush now!"
do this every first saturday of every month. eventually, the local news will catch on and start covering you (wouldn't hurt to call them, too, but not at first. let the momentum build, make it look natural, not astro-turfed). then after that, the national news will pick it up.
then, it's in the public domain, and then pollsters will start asking questions.
a few things thoughts:
- keep the message pure. don't make this an anti-war protest. don't make it about saving the whales or social security, or dissing tom delay or arnold. demonstrate for impeachment. the more pure the message, the easier it is to get into conventional wisdom circles.
- let's not call for the help of moveon or other patently-labeled "leftist" organizations. after a while, sure, they'll eventually show up, but the longer we can keep this out of the hands of the easy targets for o'reilly and the like to knock down, the more apt it will appear to be a true grassroots phenomenon.
- don't cause trouble. ever. peaceful protest is always the way to go. if you're in a city that demands permission or permits to demonstrate, be sure to get it!
- don't send out press releases. makes you look less like grass roots and more like manipulators. let the movement grow. if people know that every first saturday you'll be there, you'll attract attention, first in the form of more bodies at the demonstration, and then in the form of press.
- finally, be clear about our goal: it's not to impeach awol. it's to get people talking about impeaching awol. and then the impeachment will follow.
anybody with me?
email me and let me know what city, or any thoughts or suggestions you have. please put "impeach bush saturdays" in the subject line so i know not to delete it.
