All right, Senator. You know you've got my vote in November. Unless you lose to Edwards or take Ronald Reagan as your running mate, that much is guaranteed. But I'm an ex-Deaniac, and I was ready to give as much as I could and donate as much time as possible to knocking off the President. You haven't won that kind of enthusiasm from me just yet, but here's your first big chance:
The President of the United States is proposing and amendment that will return bigotry to the constitution, after all our attempts nearly knocked it out. You are going to tell the press that you are against any constitutional amendment that defines marriage as between a man and a woman. I don't care if you fudge why. It's OK you don't call it the 'hate amendment.' It's OK if you say you're personally against gay marriage and pro-civil unions (barely OK). It's OK if you want the matter to be left to the states to define as they will. We'll get all those things down the road.
We're in a special position here, Senator. You get to vote on this if it gets shoved through before the election (and you better believe it will be). You're going to vote no. And promise it to us as soon as possible. No amendment on this issue. Period, end of story. You come out strong on this, and there's a shiny $25 dollar donation in it for you from me (OK, so I'm poor). And probably a lot of other people too.
