There is a creeping hollowness at the center of the Democratic Party, one that Howard Dean, Paul Krugman, and blogs had started to mend. The attack in Madrid, though, revealed that we haven't been able to articulate a governing philosophy flexible enough to convince Americans to be Democrats.
