Pandering to the right wingnuts? He is one.
John McCain a "straight talking" centrist? I think not. After all, he enables dubya's agenda. Now this:

McCain wants to show he has the right stuff
The Straight Talk Express may have taken a sudden and very sharp turn to the right.
Once and future White House hopeful John McCain told the Arizona Daily Star on Tuesday that he would never, ever tailor his views to appeal to conservatives who might oppose a second run for the presidency, should he decide to make one.
"You have to do what's right. You have to do what you believe," he said. "For me to pander to somebody ... I can't do it."
Moments later, McCain said he backs the teaching of intelligent design in schools, just like President Bush. Two days after that, McCain threw his support behind an initiative to constitutionally ban gay marriage in Arizona.
"I believe that the institution of marriage should be reserved for the union of one man and one woman," McCain said in a statement.
Interestingly, the statement made no mention of the state law that already prohibits such nuptials or McCain's opposition to a federal constitutional amendment outlawing same-sex marriage. Last year, McCain criticized the proposed federal effort as "antithetical in every way to the core philosophy of Republicans."
