This won't be the longest diary, because I don't have a lot to add to this
link.
But, apparently, the international is angry that the local NYC transit workers turned down the offer and went on strike.
Apparently, the international is even thinking about stepping in and negotiating directly with the city.
It has been a long time since I took labor law, so frankly I don't know the legal implications of this. For that matter, CBS news is the only place I have seen this reported, so maybe it's not accurate.
On the other hand, I recall on this morning's news (I believe it was channel 7, the local ABC affiliate, but it was just as I was waking up so don't hold me to that) that they reported that the international had urged local 100 last night not to strike, so this is somewhat consistent.
Anyway, let me just say this- there seem to be a lot of people on this site who are against the workers because of how it inconveniences them. I urge them to take a broader view.
On the other hand, there are others who seem to take the position that as a progressive site, that everyone here MUST support any union action. I urge them to open their mind a little- nothing in this world is black and white.
EDIT: Thought of any idea that I should have included in the initial diary, as this one plummets down the list. My question to those who support the transit workers- would you feel differently if this was the police union striking?
