Diaries = Open Thread???

(From the diaries. I'm not getting involved. But if you guys want to set some loose guidelines, I can then add them to the site FAQ. It's up to you ya'll -- kos)

Another poster makes a good observation that the diaries are quickly becoming inundated with repetitive versions of the same news.  For example, today, we've got lots of diaries devoted to Zell Miller, a couple on Luskin and the Simpsons.  Indeed, this Diary entry is even repetitive of theoria's diary, which makes the observation that lots of longer, though-provoking posts get quickly pushed off the front page because of the rate at which snort snarky comments and links to news articles are added to the diaries list.

It's becoming a victim of it's own success, and we should take the time to learn from this experience and maybe figure out what might be a better way to organize or police the diaries so that it's not just the equivalent of one of Kos' "OPEN THREAD" links.

Maybe there has to be a permanent "open thread" somehwere prominent where people can continuously post shorter comments, news links, etc.
