A lot of chatter here about good potential 2008 candidates has focused on Virginia Governor Mark Warner. Ubersuccessful self-made businessman from the appealing tech sector, popular political figure in home state with good potential to swing it, Southern factor, moderate image with national press as solutions-oriented public servant... And all that jazz.
But if we're going to be doing this premature guesswork, let's really do it. Who's his runningmate?
A Senator is probably ideal, for the outside-inside tandem, or maybe a powerful veteran Representative (in other words, not a Ferraro-like reach). I'd be okay with Lincoln or Landrieu, except I really am sick of the conceding domination of our tickets to the South. Warner is amazing in that he's originally from Connecticut (I think...) and lives in very non-Southern Northern Virginia, yet somehow has managed to diffuse the culture bomb and do very well in Southside and especially Southwest VA. He doesn't have any Southern accent (I'm acknowledging that there isn't one Southern accent), or really any accent at all, which is nice for those of us who are just so damn sick of the twangs and drawls.
It would be nice to finally break out someone who isn't a 60ish white dude, but they do make up the bulk of the pool.
