For the past month or so I've been making it a point to check the letters sections of the Chicago area's three big dailies.
The Tribune is, of course, a venerable Republican paper. The Sun-Times was historically a Dem paper, but has for years now been even further to the right than the Tribune (thanks to Conrad Black's stewardship.....good riddance thief.)
And the Daily Herald is a large suburban daily catering primarily to the western and northwestern suburbs, which are rock-ribbed Republican.
And day after day, it is astonishing, and encouraging, to see the tremendous number of anti-Bush letters all three of these papers print. On most days the anti-Bush letters exceed the number of pro-Bush letters.
As each of these papers maintains a conservative, pro-Republican editorial bent, I can only assume that the papers aren't printing a disproportionally anti-Bush sample. If anything, I would expect the opposite.
The writers take Bush to task for each and every one of his evils.
And most are written not from folks within the Chicago city limits (very Dem,) but from my own suburban backyard. Dyed in the wool conservative-ville.
I think Karl Rove must be sleeping very poorly these days.
How are the letters to the editors running in your area?
