"fly" is so easy to "swat" it's almost funny.
Lott specifically praised Thurmond for his run for president - saying America should have elected him. Thurmond was running on a segregation platform at the time. Thus, Lott was saying, America should have voted for that platform.
Dodd makes no such specific references to Sen. Byrd's KKK past. In no way is Dodd saying Byrd's KKK beliefs would've been good at any point in history. Rather, Dodd refers generally to Byrd - who has certainly reformed is beliefs since his regrettable past (like Thurmond had) - as a great person. The GOP may try and bootstrap Byrd's past into such a comment, but that would be pure spin.
There was no need to spin Lott's comments.
