I know many of you were at work when President Bush greeted President Hu Jin Tao at the Whitehouse this morning.
While I was surprised that the translator called the song played BEFORE the US National Anthem the "anthem of the Republic of China"- which is IN FACT Taiwan, (a DEMOCRATIC NATION) and NOT " the PEOPLES Republic of China" ,,,(A COMMUNIST NATION WHOSE ANTHEM WAS PENNED BY NONE OTHER THAN MAO!) Why was that even allowed to be played?
I WAS MORE SUPRISED BY SOMETHING THAT HAPPENED LATER.....
After Bush mentioned that U.S. policy regarding China and Taiwan has not changed, and that we still adhere to the 'one-China' policy AND respect the "Taiwan Relations Act" (which, by law, demands that we protect Taiwan from any acts of aggression), President Hu spoke.
During his speach, a woman, who undoubtedly had the proper CLEARANCE to be there (who could get that close without such clearance in this day and age?), began to speak out.............
and was promptly hauled away by U.S. Security....as President Hu looked on.
And as President Bush 'looked on'.
That's what they do in China, Mr. Bush. Haul away people who have a dissenting viewpoint.
What a "great" message to send to the leader who stifles the FREE SPEACH of the most populous nation on Earth by use of the police.
The U.S. President could have used the opportunity to say to Mr. Hu "In OUR COUNTRY" it is OK to speak your mind..........Instead, he looked on while THE FIRST AMENDMANT was squelched in honor of a COMMUNIST with alot of money.
I am really ....disheartened....fundamentally discouraged....that just a handful of people replied to this diary.
What I wrote about touches on the fundamental aspects of what we read and write about every day here on Kos.....
I THINK the carrying-out of a PROTESTER in the face of the leader of China is beyond reproach,,,and I can't believe my diary wasn't recommended.
"Good night, and good luck."
