One of the most important liberties, enshrined in our Constitution, is the right to privacy -the fourth amendment. Unfortunately, this American freedom is being violated by our government through the use of illegal wiretapping.
The Federal Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) allows the executive branch the government to wiretap suspected terrorists in the United States. However, FISA only allows wiretapping with permission of the court, within 72 hours during a state of emergency, or during the first fifteen days of a Congressional Declaration of War. Furthermore FISA makes it a crime to wiretap outside of this authority.
The authorization of military force on September 18th 2001 did NOT grant the president power to wiretap without a court order; and, contrary to what Bush thinks, the president's constitutional authority does NOT grant the power necessary to issue warrant-less wiretapping outside the realm of FISA. Tell your senator to hold Bush accountable for illegal wiretapping.
Please also support H.R. 635, 636, and 637 which call for the censure of Bush and Cheney and call for the creation of a committee to make recommendations concerning impeachment. To write your Representative urging them to support H.R. 635, 636, and 637 please visit: http://www.gp.org/...
In a representative democracy, the rule of law establishes the necessary premise that no one is above the law, the land, and the people. However, today we suffer under an administration which sees itself above the rule of law. The Bush administration has continuously lied to and manipulated the American people. Today it is time for you to take action and tell the Bush administration we will no longer allow their abuse of power to go unnoticed. A package of bills in the House, H.R. 635, 636, and 637 aim at finally punishing the Bush administration through censure and potential impeachment.
HR635 creates a select committee in order to investigate: the Bush regime's manipulation of pre-war intelligence; and their role in use of torture for political detainees. This committee will be responsible for making recommendations regarding impeachment.
HR636 will censure Bush for the following actions:
* Failure to answer questions regarding allegations that he deceived Congress and the American people with his decision to go to war in Iraq.
* Condoning the use of torture.
* Failure to reply to a letter by 122 members of Congress on July 12, 2005, regarding the allegations from the Downing Street memo.
* Failure to explain a January 28, 2003 statement that Saddam Hussein sought large quantities of uranium from Africa, despite the fact that the CIA had consistently expressed concerns over the accuracy of the letter.
HR637 will censure Vice-President Dick Cheney for his actions and the actions of the administration. Censure of Cheney is put forth because of a long history of abuses:
* Condoning the use of torture.
* Failure to reply to a letter from several members of Congress of November 3rd, 2005, asking that he explain his role in the disclosure of the identity of Valerie Plame.
* Failure to explain a August 26th, 2002 statement that Iraq had begun efforts to acquire nuclear weapons, knowledge he claimed had been gained through first hand accounts from defectors, including Saddam's own son-in-law, despite the fact that Saddam's son-in-law had been killed in 1996 and that United States officials had no such first hand testimony.
We need your help in telling the Bush Administration that no one is above the rule of law. Please show your support for HR635, 636, and 637 by writing your Representative to support this legislation. Help protect the rule of law in our country!
