Here we go again...
Seemingly unfazed by his lack of credibility after the WMDs-in-Iraq falsehoods, Bush is now claiming that Iran is supplying parts for improvised explosive devices (IEDs) to Iraq.
The Associated Press buried the information in the story about the US pouring billions of dollars into fighting the deadly IEDs.
Bush said in a speech Monday that Iran had supplied IED components to Iraqi groups, but U.S. officials have presented no evidence to support that, nor did Bush explain why Shiite Muslim Iran would aid Iraq's Sunni-dominated insurgency.
More after the break:
Remarkable accuracy on the part of the AP, who clearly didn't read the President's speech very carefully. He actually didn't claim that Iran was supplying the IED components to the Sunnis, but rather to Shiite militia.
From Monday's speech before the Foundation for Defense of Democracies:
Some of the most powerful IEDs we are seeing in Iraq today includes components that came from Iran. Our director of National Intelligence, John Negroponte, told the Congress Tehran has been responsible for at least some of the increasing lethality of anti- coalition attacks by providing Shi'a militia with the capabilities to build improvised explosive devices in Iraq. Coalition forces have seized IEDs and components that were clearly produced in Iran. Such actions, along with Iran's support for terrorism and its pursuit of nuclear weapons, are increasingly isolating Iran. And America will continue to rally the world to confront these threats.
My, but that saber-rattling sounds familiar. A big claim with no real evidence. I find myself with the strange sensation of deja-vu, reminded of the 2003 State of the Union warnings about the imminent threat of Iraq.
Do I deny the possible connection of Iran with the budding civil was in Iraq? Of course not. I'm just amazed that a President who has cried "wolf" so often could possibly expect us to take his word about Iran without evidence.
