Look,
The Army and Marines are in crisis mode in their recruiting. They have even changed the numbers after the fact to try to make the crisis look like less of a crisis! But, shouldn't they by doing the opposite? I mean, they want Americans to know how much they need new recruits, don't they? Don't they? shouldn't they being going on Leno and Letterman, Today, Good Morning America, MTV and going, without our prompting, to Young/College Republican gatherings?
More below. . .
Shouldn't the joint chiefs be begging Bush and other bigwigs to promote enlistment in their speeches? Shouldn't they be posting "Uncle Sam I need you in the US ARMY!" posters far and wide instead of covertly compiling secret lists of high schoolers and setting up booths on college campuses? Christ, it's like they're trying to hide the fact that they need more recruits! Why aren't they pushing issue on the national media?
The only reason I can imagine for this strange, irrational behavior is that the recruiting brass do not have control over the process. Someone does not want this message of a call to Americans to serve their country to reach the mainstream. Someone does not want to remind Americans that they need to put up or shut up. Someone does not want Americans to see Uncle Sam posters on bus stops and airports to remind Americans that our military is in dire straits and that we are at war. I wonder who would not want this to happen and would have the power to stop Army and Marines in their tracks? Hmmm.
Am I off base in suspecting that recruitment is now firmly in the control of Karl Rove and company? Someone tell me that I am wrong and why.
