If not for Harris and Blackwell, we could live in a very different world.
But try as I might, I cannot find a website that tells me what Secretary Of State elections are upcoming.
It took me a while, but I did find one list of the current Secretaries Of State. The National Association of Secretaries of State (Nass.Org) has a list, here.
But here's the missing information that we still need:
- When did each term start? When does it end and when is the next election?
- Which states' Secretaries of State are responsible for certifying elections, and have the power to affect them? (If they don't, when what position does that state use for that purpose?)
- What future candidates should we be supporting?
Judging from the list, we've got the following Secretaries Of State from swing states:
Democrat:
New Mexico: Rebecca Vigil-Giron
Wisconsin: Douglas La Follette
Arkansas: Charlie Daniels
Oregon: Bill Bradbury
Pennsylvania: Pedro Cortes
Missouri: Robin Carnahan
Tennessee: Riley Darnell
Iowa: Chet Culver
Republican:
Washington: Sam Reed
West Virginia: Betty Ireland
Arizona: Jan Brewer
Ohio: Kenneth Blackwell
Colorado: Donetta Davidson
Michigan: Terri Lynn Land
Minnesota: Mary Kiffmeyer
Florida: Glenda Hood
Nevada: Dean Heller
Some well-targeted blogosphere donations could keep the next Blackwell or Harris from attaining office. So we should start tracking the Secretaries of State.
Please include any information on term lengths, election dates, or Secretary Of State candidates that you can find, or if you know of a site that is already doing this tracking.
