STOCKTON -- Liberal Republican Pete McCloskey, who hasn't served in Congress since 1983, is ready to challenge Rep. Richard Pombo, R-Tracy.
McCloskey, 78, said Monday that if Republicans can't find someone to run against the Tracy congressman, he would move to Pleasanton and take on Pombo.
Pombo's district includes much of San Joaquin County as well as Pleasanton, San Ramon, Danville and Morgan Hill.
A former U.S. Marine, McCloskey served in the House of Representatives from 1967 to 1983, representing a district on the Peninsula. He made an unsuccessful presidential primary bid in 1972 on an anti-Vietnam War platform, attempting to defeat President Richard Nixon.
McCloskey made the announcement during a press conference where he spoke out against Pombo's recent bill to revamp the Endangered Species Act.
McCloskey, who was a co-author of the original act, called Pombo's bill "outrageous" and said if it passes, it would turn back the progress made so far.
This is just great stuff. More here and here.
Nice to see to the old-guard Republicans standing up to the far-right, corporate, anti-environmental windbags that currently pass themselves off as the only 'true' Republicans.
