The only way I can see the U.S. being able to begin to move Iraq towards something resembling sucess is to involve the international community. And I mean really involve it, not just ask them for money and thank them with further arrogance and name-calling. Even if we were to get the U.N. or at least a coalition of countries not seen as completely hostile by the Arab world involved, I'm wondering if we've already passed the point at which it could help.
Most everyone on this board agrees that Bush has got to go, but will another president even get the opportunity to repair the damage he's done to our reputation on the international stage? Has the rest of the world judged the American electorate as too self-centered and incompetent to be trusted anymore? Will simply putting a new executive in office be enough to return things to the way they used to be?
I'm inclined to think not. I remember how incredulous my friends overseas were when I first spoke with them after the election in 2000, and that was before anybody really know just how bad Bush would be. I have the sinking feeling that this will not prove to be a quick-fix situation either.
