These words woke me up from my sleep last night. As spoken by
Keith Olbermann of MSNBC's Countdown in his Special Comment on the Clinton ambush by FOX, on Monday, September 25, 2006.
Olbermann: Clinton told truth about 9/11
From Orwell's 1984, pg 20
People simply disappeared, always during the night. Your name was removed from the registers, every record of everything you had ever done was wiped out, your one-time existence was denied and then forgotten. You were abolished, annhilated: vaporized was the usual word.
join me on the flip...
Olbermann: It is not important that the current President's portable public chorus has described his predecessor's tone as "crazed."
pg.32
If the Party could thrust its hand into the past and say this or that even, it never happened--that, surely, was more terrifying than mere torture and death.
Olbermann: The kind of proof of incompetence, for which the administration and its hyenas at Fox need to find a diversion, in a scapegoat
pg. 32
And if all others accepted the lie which the Party imposed--if all records told the same tale--then the lie passed into history and became truth. 'Who controls the past' ran the Party slogan, 'controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.
Olbermann: Promise to talk of charity and generosity; but instead launch into the lies and distortions with which the Authoritarians among us attack the virtuous and reward the useless.
pg.46-47
Don't you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought?... Has it ever occurred to your, Winston, that by the year 2050, at the very latest, not a single human being will be alive who could understand such a conversation as we are having now?...The whole climate of thought will be different. In fact, there will be no thought, as we understand it now. Orthodoxy means not thinking--not needing to think. Orthodoxy is unconsciousness.
Olbermann: Had it been true that Clinton had been distracted from the hunt for bin Laden in 1998 because of the Monica Lewinsky nonsense, why did these same people not applaud him for having bombed bin Laden's camps in Afghanistan and Sudan on Aug. 20, of that year? For mentioning bin Laden by name as he did so?
pg. 159
In Oceania at the present day, Science, in the old sense, has almost ceased to exist. In Newspeak there is no word for 'Science.' The empirical method of thought, on which all the scientific achievements of the past were founded, is opposed to the most fundamental principles of Ingsoc.
Olbermann: Republican Senator Grams of Minnesota invoked the movie "Wag The Dog." Republican Senator Coats of Indiana questioned Mr. Clinton's judgment. Republican Senator Ashcroft of Missouri--the future attorney general--echoed Coats. Even Republican Senator Arlen Specter questioned the timing.
pg. 36
Day by day and almost minute by minute the past was brought up to date. In this way every prediction made by the Party could be shown by documentary evidence to have been correct; nor was any item of news, or any expression of opinion, which conflicted with the needs of the moment, ever allowed to remain on record. All history was a palimpsest, scraped clean and reinscribed exactly as often as was necessary.
No more nightmares. Let us not live a future based on fiction. Mobilize democracy. Thank you.
