Russ Feingold and Pat Leahy, two of the staunchest progressives/liberals in the Senate, voted to confirm.
Meanwhile, centrist Harry Reid is opposing him. As are fellow centrists/DINO's (depending on one's perspective) Biden and Feinstein.
How to explain such a bizarre fracture in the party?
I propose the unthinkable: Senators are following their own instincts and consciences.
They are (gasp!) thinking for themselves.
Feingold believes in his gut that Roberts is non-ideological and a straight shooter. Biden thinks Roberts was being evasive and less than candid.
