I thought it was fun to drop some record reviews and a unintentionally provocative throwaway poll on a Kossack Friday Night so here it goes again.
- Nouvelle Vauge - This is the coolest, literally, thing I've heard in awhile. It's an album of 80's goth and punk covers (with a few exceptions) done by Brazilian and French women with a Gilberto-style cool Bossa Nova band backing. Most of the songs are recognizable, well, to people my age. They do Love Will Tear Us Apart, Just Can't Get Enough, Guns of Brixton, and Making Plans for Nigel but it was the cover of the DK's Too Drunk too Fuck that really stood out. Camille's delivery on the song is pretty breathy but her giggles during the chorus and high notes are what really does it.
Bob Mould - Body of Song - Hot off the presses this week. I'll admit I haven't listened to Bob since the first Sugar album although I have been reading his blog. No, you're not going to get any latent Husker Du (damn, another band I left out of last week's poll) fixes or even any Sugar fixes. It's a fairly subdued album with a few rocking moments and one true dance track, "Shine Your (Love Light Hope)." It's good if you like Bob Mould. Oh, and I should mention there are some Fugazi-esque moments thanks to the appearance by Brendan Canty.
- Since You've Been Gone - How many people who think they're indie-cool find this Kelly Clarkson tune to be infectious and kind of rockin'? Ted Leo obviously did, too, because he does an accoustic cover of it with a nod to the bridge of "Since You've Been Gone" being cribbed from elsewhere when he breaks into "Maps" by the Yeah Yeah Yeah's halfway through before finishing the song. This a google-it-yourself recommendation since it's never been officially released and the link I got it from is dead.
Not much else to offer this week. It's kind of a slow time and I've been busy writing papers and such.
This poll is designed to be fun and less offensive to the ultimate fan of whatever band I forgot.
