I got home from work tonight and went to check my mail. There was a pamphlet in there from Stephen Harper, Leader of the Opposition, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada. The title of it was, "Pride Goeth Before a Fall". It went on to the typical Paul Martin/Liberal bashing and has a survey at the bottom to fill in and mail back. The two survey questions were:
- Have you had enough of Paul Martin's Liberals? Yes or No.
- Is it time for a new Conservative government? Yes or No.
Then they list the website where you can complete the survey on-line:
http://www.conservative.ca/survey/
I have two things of note below the fold...
Point 1:
At first I rolled my eyes at the biblical reference. Then I thought to myself that they can't even get the quote right. Isn't it "Pride cometh before a fall"? At least that's how I always heard the phrase.
So I scrounged around for my bible (after blowing an inch of dust off of it... I am SO going to hell!) and checked the concordance. Well I found the quote and it is actually this, from Proverbs 16:18:
"Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall."
So, in fact, using the word goeth is actually biblically accurate! Then I got really creeped out because it struck me that the average Joe wouldn't realize goeth was the right word. Probably only bible-thumping wingnuts would clue into the accuracy of the phrase used!
However, whether the quote is accurate or not is irrelevant. It's the fact that they are actually attempting to Repblicanize the Canadians of this country by using biblical references in their propaganda mailings! It sickens me.
Point 2:
I then went on-line to complete the survey (screw them!) because NO, I haven't had enough of Paul Martin's Liberals and NO, it is NOT time for a new Conservative government!
So, I get to the survey page by typing in the link above and guess what? The URL magically changes to:
http://cp.parl.gc.ca/survey/survey.asp?ID=11
That looks alot like a Government of Canada website to me. Are they allowed to use that for party politics? It doesn't smell right to me, but I simply don't know the answer to that.
But here comes the big kicker....
You can't complete the survey unless you provide your personal information! The required fields are: name, address, city, province, postal code and e-mail address. So I filled it in anyway because I can't wait to see what sort of spam I'll start getting from them based on my anti-conservative responses to the survey!
But, in all seriousness, what does that say when the survey being promoted is not anonymous? Do they think it will prevent liberal "whackos" like me from completing the survey so they can feel safe in their biased little world by quoting survey results that simply confirm what they want to believe? Or does it simply provide them with a list of names of liberal "whackos" like me?
Thoughts or comments?
