So I was watching this Barbara Walters special last night on President Bush's second term, when Laura Bush led us into the Cabinet Room to show off her redecoration, including restoring FDR's original lighting sconces and placing plaques on the back of each cabinet member's chair denoting their various positions in government service over the years.
Don Rumsfeld's chair was quite impressive, listing his White House jobs since the Ford Administration, each on a different plaque. Then we saw Colin Powell's chair. One plaque read "Secretary of State 2001-." Excuse me, but Colin Powell was Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff for the first President Bush and President Clinton, as well as National Security Adviser to President Reagan.
Then it hit me! You must have to buy your own plaques! Rummy's an egomaniac, Powell a modest public servant. But then I guess we knew that already.
