There's always a lot of talk about challenging Lieberman. I have to admit that I'm concerned enough about the Dems holding their ground in the Senate and that I'm not sure whether we should be spending money on something like that when so many of our seats are endangered.
But there are some incumbents, mainly in the House, that I think may need primary challenges.
Bill Lipinski retired this year - AFTER winning the primary - and put his son Daniel in his place. Daniel has no experience, he just moved back to IL after years in Tennessee, and he is very far to the right on all issues. I heard that this district is conservative Dem, but even if that's the case, I think that a more moderate Democrat could have a chance here. Beyond that, I think Daniel Lipinski is going to face a strong GOP challenge in either 2006 or 2008 (if they want to concentrate more on ousting Melissa Bean and keeping Henry Hyde's seat in 2006, they may wait until 2008). He has all these hurdles that he will have to overcome every 2 years.
I also think that someone should challenge David Wu. I think the main reason he got reelected this year was a sympathy backlash over the tactics of his opponent, the fact that his opponent was unlikeable and had a bad reputation, and Kerry's big win in Oregon. None of these will be factors in 2006. But his iffy Congressional career and his past scandals may still be big factors.
