It seems that someone in Connecticut is foolish enough to take on Joe Lieberman in the Ct. Senate race next year. John Orman, a Fairfield University professor, and Democrat, is said to be running against Lieberman. With approval ratings in the high 60's, Orman will have a lot of difficulty in trying to sway Connecticut voters away from the very popular Lieberman. According to several recent polls, Lieberman has a 68% approval rating. 72% of Republicans, 66% of Democrats and 69% of Independents, like the job that Lieberman is doing
If Orman is going to have any luck at all in cutting into Lieberman's huge lead, he has two topics to choose from. Lieberman's pro Iraq war stance, and the possible closing of the New London naval shipyard.
Democrats are very upset with Bush on Iraq. Orman must capitalize on this issue. He must show that the war was a bad idea from the start, and must pounce on Lieberman's support for the war. Second, if the naval shipyard is forced to close, some voters might blame Lieberman for not doing enough to keep it open.
But even with those issues, it will be almost impossible for Orman to win. Lieberman's base is very solid and as I said earlier, he is very popular with Ct. voters. Looks like Mr. Orman will be the Democratic lamb to be led to slaughter. Face facts, Joe Lieberman will be around, and a Senator as long as he wants to be. Joe Lieberman, a winner for the Democrats, and for the DLC!!!
