The cirular firing squad has performed its job. Though my heart tells me otherwise, my head tells me that Dean will not win. I will vote for him, donate additional money, and continue with all the meetups and whatever else it is they ask me to do, but I honestly think his chances are slim. The one who picks up his mantle will lead a bruised Democratic party to defeat in November.
Which leaves me the awful predicament of having to choose from the sorry lot of candidates that are left. Lieberman and Sharpton are no-brainers, out of consideration completely. Kerry, whom I once supported, has burned too many bridges for me to forgive him. Clark, while a great resume, is completely uninspiring. And Edwards, once I get past his sunny personality, well, I disagree with him on a lot of things. It makes me sad that Braun and Graham have left the race.
So what to do? I will support Howard Dean until the moment he is either elected President or asks me to support someone else. But there is something he could do that would reenergize the base, the Democratic Party, and just might result in victory in November.
Howard Dean, save us from John Kerry and exit in the only way to keep your movement alive. Step aside and ask Al Gore to pick up the pieces of this campaign.
