The Senate voted on the Vitter Amendment today- which would strip provisions for eventual citizenships for illegals who have been here for more than 2 years.
illegals are people first not felons (for those who might forget).
The vote tally was 66-33 against the Vitter amendment. If the Vitter amendment passed, the Senate would have followed the path of imprisonment and deportation as in the zenophobic House version (Elian Gonzalez x 11,000,000).

Key GOP Senators who agreed against citizenship are:
Ensign (NV), Allard (CO), Allen (VA), Talent (MO), Coryn (TX), Hutchinson (TX), Kyl (AZ), Santorum (PA)
Allen, Ensign, Talent, Kyl, and Santorum are vulnerable and up for re-election in 2006
Hutchinson is safe for 2006
2008 - Allard and Coryn are up for re-election
