I don't come to this lightly or easily. I first started singing Clark's praises back in '02, way before most people jumped on the bandwagon. I ended up becoming county coordinator, which is pretty embarrassing to back out of (it probably made me hang on longer than I might have otherwise). But I just can't continue when I have some deep philosophical problems with the candidate--to do so would be soulless. I'll explain what "broke this camel's back" below.
Obviously, being a pro-invasion guy (as I recently read 61% of the under-30 crowd is, btw--compared with only 53% of those over 30...FWIW), I had to swallow Clark's opposition to the war from the beginning. But before he announced, when he was appearing on talk shows, he seemed to emphasise "it was an elective war,
but now that we are there we can't go back--so there is some good we can do if we plan it right". Now he's railing against the $87 billion vote, which I find irresponsible and an example of base pandering (and not even very smart pandering, based on that Carville poll).
But the final straw was reading that Clark said unhesitatingly that he would veto the Partial Birth Abortion ban. What's left that represents my principles? Compared to Gephardt, not much. Gep was my favourite before Clark entered; and now he comes out ahead on those two issues as well. (Dean, of course, whiffs them both--so he doesn't gain anything in this for me.)
So now I have to tell the wesleyclarkweblog to stop linking to me, tell the campaign (above and below) that I'm quitting...ugh. Thought I'd start here, use you guys as a sounding board. Thanks.
