Now if I'd only saved Friday's diary for tonight, I could have blown the roof off recent TC commentary stats. Ahh well, it was kinda breaking news :-). Let's see what I can do instead...
If you didn't see my totally nonpolitical ridiculously personal and absolutely off-topic diary Friday... we got court approval from Ethiopia and Kid Brillig Two (hereafter known as KB2) is legally our son now. ::wild cheering:: To answer the biggest question everyone we talk to has... no, we don't yet know when we're traveling. We have an appointment with our case manager tomorrow and hopefully we'll know a bit more then. However, it will be within the next 2-4 weeks. Needless to say we're excited, busy, excited, panicked, excited, and trying to get everything done Right This Very Minute! Let me share a bit of what's going on at Casa Brillig these days...
- We filled prescriptions for antimalarials (the lowlands where our son was born is malaria country), altitude sickness (Addis Ababa is nearly 8000' above sea level), and something for Really Bad Lower-GI Issues (we're really, really hoping NOT to need that one). We're also assembling the travel medical kit we'll be bringing - a bit more involved than the tylenol and Neosporin we usually bring!
- Kicked into high gear the final preparation of KB2's room.
- Started investigating flights from Boston to Addis Ababa by way of (hopefully) London, where we have friends and would like take a few days to show to KB1.
- Bought a new camcorder (tiny) and portable instant printer, so we can take pictures of KB2 to give to his surviving birth family, who we likely will have the chance to meet.
- Did I mention school and swim season are still in effect for KB1? This weekend and the following one (if we're here) have two-day meets scheduled (next week's is a travel meet in CT, even!) and her teachers expect her to get her homework done :-).
- We are required to bring one 50-lb box of donations, we'll ask tomorrow what is most needed. It could be formula, anti-fungal shampoo, Tylenol, or any of a hundred other things. We'll also be bringing as many toys for the kids as we can stuff in our bags. I'll be trying to make due for the entire trip with perhaps 3 changes of clothing. Any of you who saw my suitcase at NN understand this is... a lofty goal!
- Oh yeah... Mr. Brillig is flat-out busy at work with a massive business development project that has multiple deadlines between now and the end of the year. They understand he's leaving town for a few weeks, but want him here until then. Go figure :-).
- And about 2354 other things that all need doing, including the #$%^ raking.
We feel as though we've been planning this journey for years, yet have no idea what to expect and have to prepare in mere weeks. It reminds me in some ways to the time spent waiting to finish school, to start school, or get married, have a biological child, or take that trip around the world you've dreamed of. What in your life have you prepared for and yet felt totally unprepared for?
I may have to take a few week's TC leave on very short notice soon, but I'm here checking the mailbox tonight!! Let's see what the good folk of DailyKos nominated as the best of the best...
From PerfectStormer:
These happened just after 9:30, so I assume they count toward Tuesday's quota... ElRay and mistersite ponder the linguistic and social implications of gchaucer2's "mean pork schnitzel." I LOLed.
From annrose:
A great put down by J M F of people who don’t want their tax money to go for abortions. Absolutely the best.
From Land of Enchantment:
susanthe speaks for me!
From kath25:
Newsie8200 explains that many folks in the Netroots are unaware of how progressive organizations often work to impact state and local races, which can be imperative to protecting reproductive rights.
From GreenChileDem:
JekyllnHyde hit a homerun with this classic in Jerome a Paris' diary No one is more French than I am
From Magnifico:
In trifecta's diary about Blackwater bribery, voracious made a comment on which U.S.-based "terrorist" organizations really get America's attention.
From Yours Truly, brillig:
In today's Midday Open Thread, iconoclastic cat asks why anyone would be afraid of Michael Steele. Andrew C White gives one extraordinarily good reason.
RFK Lives gets my TC nod for the last sentence in this comment in which he compares treatment of Blackwater/XE and ACORN.
A great big plate of misir wot and injera to virgomusic for her running of teh mojo tonight! As always, thanks to cskendrick and sardonyx for making the mojo magic possible!
