UPDATED to make sure numbers reflect only those under 65--see below.
In the spirit of Rep. Grayson's speeches in the House, here are the state numbers of people who die a year due to being uninsured.
I based this on the Harvard study Grayson mentions (pdf) (which I, a non-medical statistician, thought was extremely rigorous and well done), interpolated across the rate of non-elderly uninsured in each state according to Kaiser, using population estimates from the Census Bureau.
The point is to allow you to tell your senator, whether you want to vote for the most cost-efficient plan or the one that saves more lives, your choice is extremely clear. And now you can give numbers to those lives.
Update detail -- the uninsured rates I found are only those under 65 (this controls for the fact that most people over 65 have Medicare, and thus are insured), so I updated the population numbers to only reflect that (e.g., subtracted the over 65 numbers from here).
State | Population Under 65 | Percent uninsured | Number uninsured | Number that die a year now | Number that die a year under the House bill (3%) | Number that die a year under the Senate bill (6%) |
