It was reported yesterday that Baldwin City State Senator Tom Holland is openly considering a run against Kansas Senator Sam Brownback this fall. The story was originally reported by the Lawrence Journal-World here.
Although Senator Holland does not enjoy the same amount of name recognition that Senator Brownback does, he does have experience running against and beating incumbent Republicans candidates. In 2002 he beat Rep. Ralph Tanner to begin serving in the legislature, and in 2008 he defeated Republican Sen. Roger Pine for the 3rd senate district seat. The 3rd district is a very rural one and encapsulates strong areas of Republican support.
Another thing that might make this race interesting for the moderate Holland is the level of antipathy towards Brownback in the Sunflower state. There are no public polling numbers out, but if the forum comments are any indication, Senator Brownback may not appear as invincible as previously thought.
