At least one conservative write/blogger, Matt Lewis, has recognized the Arizona's SB1070 is not a good law. In his article "Avoiding hypocrisy on immigration" (yes, he actually uses the word "hypocrisy" in the title) Mr. Lewis warns that conservatives need to be skeptical of this new law. He has the biggest problem with the "reasonable suspicion" wording in this bill, and feels that it may not be the "illegals" that will be stopped and harassed, rather, it will be the legal Mexican American citizens of Arizona the will bear the brunt of this bill.
In this article, of course Mr. Lewis make ridiculous assumptions that the Democrats are playing politics with this issue to fire up their Hispanic base (like the GOP does anything but find ways to exclude them from their party). He also contends that the White House has been on a virtual assault on the conservative media and the Tea Party, so much so that many there are afraid that Big Brother will be intruding further into their lives.
So Mr. Lewis points out that by conservatives favoring this Arizona bill and having government starting to intrude into the lives of individuals as they can do under this law is the very thing that the conservatives are fearful of - government intrusion into individual lives. And hence the hypocrisy.
But of course, there is also lots of blame in this short article, from Obama to the federal government to liberals...(yawn yawn), we know the story here.
So this is a short diary, but at least one conservative, for now, in his sort of feeble and tortured way, is at least trying to speak out against SB1070. Good for him. Tomorrow may be another battle, but today his voice in this matter does more good than harm.
This is a tough battle for progressives/liberals to fight alone. I think more conservative voices against this law are needed as well.
