First, I am very happy about the repeal of DADT but sad about the DREAM Act. So long as people are left behind, I can not celebrate this great victory fully. As one who is neither GLBT nor Latino, I guess I'm just one of those progressives who cares about what is right. A straight white/Anglo progressive, a liberal.
That said, I want to thank President Obama and others for this step forward toward equality.
President Obama faced a lot of criticism the last couple years here because it appeared to many that this day would not happen. Without getting bogged down into who was right or wrong, I think thanks are in order to him for supporting repeal. A lot of us are angry with him on various issues, including the recent tax deal, but he was on the right side here, even if too slow for some.
Harry Reid gets shit here on a regular basis, at least since I came here in October 2006. But he deserves thanks for getting this through today.
As for Nancy Pelosi, she has beeen an ally for so long, she deserves flowers for just being herself.
Many others deserve thanks, especially those activists who fought and sacrified. If you have not yet, go to Clarknt67's great diary to celebrate and give thanks.
The Triumph of a Movement!
Finally, thank you to the few Republican Senators who did the right thing. May this act of decency open your hearts in the future so that you may act with more decency in the days to come (Unlikely: some voted to filibuster the DREAM Act today)
Celebrate today, tommorow back to work on DOMA.
Update I: I have not liked Sen. Lieberman's policy positions since at least the early 90s and it got much worse from him in the last few years with the Iraq invasion and leading to his opposition to Barack Obama in 2008 and work to destroy the public option in 2009 and 10. That said, thank you Senator Lieberman for all you did on DADT repeal. People are complex and even those we dislike can sometimes do good and they deserve our thanks and recognition when they do so.
